Welcome from the Mayor

Greetings!

As Mayor, and on behalf of the Dubuque City Council and City staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the City of Dubuque’s official website! Like our community itself, this website is continually expanding and evolving. Whether you are a current Dubuque resident, interested in moving to Dubuque, or starting, relocating, or growing a business here, this site will provide you with a wealth of information and interactive services to meet your needs.

Each year, my City Council colleagues and I review our vision for Dubuque’s future and, with citizen input, adopt goals and priorities for our community. In August 2020, we affirmed our vision statement for the City of Dubuque, which states:

Brad Cavanagh
  • Dubuque 2036 is a sustainable and resilient city, an inclusive and equitable community where ALL are welcome. Dubuque 2036 has preserved our Masterpiece on the Mississippi, has a strong, diverse economy and expanding connectivity. Our residents experience healthy living and active lifestyles; have choices of quality, affordable, livable neighborhoods; have an abundance of diverse, fun things to do; and are successfully and actively engaged in the community.

This vision of our community’s future shapes all we do as a city. We aren’t just building a community of choice for ourselves, but for generations to come.  I invite you to learn more about our City’s goals and priorities, especially our ongoing commitment to sustainability. Dubuque has made great progress toward becoming a truly sustainable city, and we continue this essential commitment today. I hope you will visit the Sustainable Dubuque web site to learn more.

If you are a virtual visitor, I invite you to come to Dubuque soon and experience our “Masterpiece on the Mississippi” for yourself. As the oldest city in Iowa, Dubuque is rich in history and built for an exciting future. Stroll through our city and you will find impressive historic architecture, a re-energized downtown, a riverfront that showcases the majesty of the Mississippi River and beautiful landscapes with breath-taking views. Our city offers something for every traveler, from excellent accommodations and conference space to award-winning restaurants, nationally acclaimed museums, charming shops, and picturesque parks and trails.

Dubuque is blessed with a hardworking, skilled, and educated workforce, supported by numerous quality private and public institutions of higher learning. Our focus on progressive economic development promotes citizen involvement. This formula for success has positioned Dubuque to be among the top cities in the Midwest to raise a family, have a meaningful career, start or grow a business, and enjoy life! We are proud to have earned numerous community awards and recognitions as a result.

Thank you for visiting our site. We work hard to make our City of Dubuque website user-friendly and a great way to interact with our local city government. We are glad you are here and look forward to seeing you again soon!

Sincerely,
Brad Cavanagh
Mayor
