Purpose

The Zoning Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial board consisting of five members who are residents of the City of Dubuque and who expect to remain residents of the City for their five-year term.

The Board reviews applications regarding criteria for granting of special exceptions, conditional use permits, or variances. The Board also decides citizen’s appeals of orders, requirements, decisions, or determinations made by Planning Services Staff.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment hears cases given by applicants and decides whether the request should be granted based on the criteria set forth in the Unified Development Code.

As a quasi-judicial body, decisions of the Board are final. They do not go on to the City Council. Appeals of Board decisions can be appealed only to the District Court within 30 days of the decision.
