Sanitary Sewer Collection System

The Engineering Department is responsible for the construction and rehabilitation of the sanitary sewer collection system which consists of over 300 miles of sewer and serves over 20,000 properties. This infrastructure is critical for the protection of public health and environment and is required to meet Federal regulatory requirements.

Sanitary Sewer Backups

To report a backup, contact the Public Works Department at 563.589.4250. The Public Works Department will inspect the city main. In many instances, the problem is in the private lateral that runs from the house/building to the city main.

Inflow & Infiltration Program

To reduce and eliminate I&I, the City has an Inflow & Infiltration (I&I) Program that addresses both private property and public infrastructure. Private property inspections and smoke testing are used to identify improper private property connections. Meanwhile, smoke testing, manhole inspections, and a sanitary sewer grading are used to identify I&I in the public infrastructure.
