Secure Dubuque Personal Surveillance System Registration

Secure Dubuque is a community partnership program that encourages residents to register their home surveillance system with the Dubuque Police Department. In the event a crime occurs in the area, footage from the system could be of assistance to the department, increasing the efficiency of the investigation. Personal surveillance systems can include security cameras and doorbell cameras.

After registering a system, the resident’s contact information and system details are added to a database maintained by the police department. The police department does not have direct access to any video recordings. Information contained within the registration database is not available to the public. If criminal activity occurs in the area, the police department will assess if a residential surveillance system may have picked something up on video, and may contact the resident for assistance.  Residents reserve the right to decline access to their system at any time.

FAQs

Why should I register?

Personal Surveillance Systems can range from security cameras to doorbell cameras and are installed to prevent criminal activity and to secure your property. Registering with Secure Dubuque will file your personal system with the police department.

What happens when I register?

After registering your system, your contact information and system details are added to a database. If criminal activity occurs in your neighborhood, the police department will assess if your system may have picked something up on video, and may contact you for assistance.

Can police access my cameras at any time?

Cameras cannot be accessed by police and without proper authorization from the owner.  Registering your system gives police the acknowledgement that a video recording of an incident may exist. Partnering with the police department can help prevent and deter future criminal activity from occurring, however, at any time, you as the owner can determine whether or not you wish to allow access of your system to police.
