[ARCHIVED] Woman Arrested for 2nd Degree Murder

On January 4th, 2016, at 11:48 a.m. Dubuque Police responded to 2944 Jackson Street #1, on the report of a disturbance.

Officers ultimately gained entry to the residence and located a deceased, adult male inside later identified as Gary E. Breckenridge, 72, of that address. No one else was present in the residence. In accordance with protocol, a Medical Examiner Investigator (M.E.I.) was contacted and responded to the scene. During a preliminary examination, the M.E.I. determined there was a suspicious injury to Breckenridge’s head. This was later confirmed by the State Medical Examiner, who further advised the injury was caused by blunt force trauma consistent with being struck by a baseball bat.

Shortly after the disturbance, Breckenridge’s ex-wife and cohabitant, Dolores A. Flynn, 62, was located inside the laundromat at 27th & Jackson Street. The following day, Flynn allegedly told a family member she struck Breckenridge multiple times with a bat that she later hid in a ditch culvert near the residence. Investigators were directed to the location and recovered the bat believed to have been used by Flynn. Surveillance and traffic cameras in the area appear to show Flynn walking to and from the location where the bat was found.

Today at approximately 3:00 p.m., Flynn was arrested at Mercy Hospital on a warrant for Second Degree Murder, a Class B Felony punishable by up to fifty years in prison. She is being held in the Dubuque County Jail on $500,000 bond.

As with any criminal case, the charges filed are allegations and any suspects are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law.
