With consistently warmer weather hopefully arriving soon, the Dubuque Police Department would like to share the following crime prevention and safety recommendations with citizens in an effort to reduce the anticipated uptick in certain criminal/disruptive activity:

Residential & vehicle burglary: Keep residential doors locked at all times and if windows are open, ensure they cannot be opened far enough to allow human entry. The only time vehicle doors should be unlocked is during entry/exit, and windows opened only slightly – especially when the vehicle is stationary (parked or at a stop light/sign). Do not leave items of value in plain view within a vehicle – remove or hide them within (preferably locked in the trunk or glove compartment).

Noise: Police will again increase enforcement of quality of life issues, including, but not limited to noise enforcement. With more citizens opening their windows and going outdoors - loud music, vehicles (cars, trucks AND motorcycles) and animals can all be disruptive and lead to more serious disturbances, altercations, criminal charges and even arrest.

Alcohol/drug impairment: Irresponsible use of alcohol and/or drugs contribute to the vast majority of law enforcement calls for service and this phenomenon only increases in the spring/summer. Operating While Intoxication, Public Intoxication and disturbances will again receive increased enforcement effort and citizens are reminded to immediately report any of the above activity to authorities. Those who engage in alcohol consumption are reminded to do so responsibly and err on the side of caution when deciding whether to drive or venture out in public.

Child Safety: Remind children of spring/summer safety by discussing “stranger danger”, “safety in numbers”, and other tips pertaining to pedestrian/bicycle safety, swimming, and reporting suspicious/criminal activity right away. Drivers should be increasingly vigilant for children outside playing, riding, walking/running, etc.
