[ARCHIVED] Celebrate Safely Over Independence Day

With Independence Day nearly upon us, the Dubuque Fire and Police Departments are seeking the public’s assistance in ensuring the holiday is celebrated safely. As a reminder, fireworks are illegal in Iowa, including those purchased in other states.

With Independence Day nearly upon us, the Dubuque Fire and Police Departments are seeking the public’s assistance in ensuring the holiday is celebrated safely. As a reminder, fireworks are illegal in Iowa, including those purchased in other states. And while “snakes”, sparklers, caps, are generally considered legal, they still pose injury/fire risks if not used properly under responsible adult supervision. These celebratory items are also strongly discouraged during the July 3rd Fireworks & Airshow in Dubuque, given the large volume of revelers concentrated in a small area. Additionally, the above agencies offer the following suggestions in an effort to make the event safer and more enjoyable for everyone:

- Pets should be left at home, with the exception of legitimate service animals.

- Arrive early as parking is limited and expect significant delays when leaving.

- Kerper Blvd. will be closed at an unspecified time prior to the airshow and no additional vehicles will be allowed past the closure point – no exceptions.

- Motorist should use caution and yield to pedestrians. Be especially aware of children running about the area. Pedestrians will be afforded time to vacate the area before any vehicles are released following the show.

- Pedestrians should not occupy the median area of Kerper Blvd. until after the road closure.

- Celebrate responsibly and avoid excessive alcohol consumption and/or driving while impaired.

- Parents/guardians should maintain visual and/or physical contact with their children at all times.

Extra police, fire/EMS, and security personnel will be present at the event to ensure the above recommendations are honored. The cooperation of all attendees is appreciated.
