[ARCHIVED] 24 HOUR RAINFALL CAUSES SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOWS AND BYPASS PUMPING IN DUBUQUE

24 HOUR RAINFALL CAUSES SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOWS AND BYPASS PUMPING IN DUBUQUE

DUBUQUE – Continuous rain over the last twenty-four hours and ground already saturated by recent rain events are the principal causes of sanitary sewer overflows that occurred early this morning on West Locust Street, Rosedale Avenue, and North Booth Street. Manholes overflowed into the street at the noted locations just after midnight, forcing the City of Dubuque to initiate emergency bypass-pumping of untreated wastewater into the Rosedale, West Locust Street, and North Booth Street storm sewers in order to reduce the likelihood of sewer backups into a number of nearby homes. The storm sewers eventually drain into the Mississippi River. While bypass pumping has ended on North Booth Street and large truck-towed tankers have been loading and hauling wastewater from Rosedale Avenue to another sanitary sewer nearer the City of Dubuque Water and Resource Recovery Center, bypass pumping continues on West Locust Street.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources cautions people to keep their children and pets away from the noted streets, which are posted, for forty-eight (48) hours.

For more information, contact the Manchester IDNR field office at 563-927-2640 or John Klostermann at the City of Dubuque at 563-589-4250.
