Sustainability is defined by a community’s ability to meet the environmental, economic, and social equity needs of today without reducing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Sustainable Dubuque utilizes a systemic approach to making Dubuque sustainable. Dubuque’s model involves a three-part approach that integrates: Environmental and Ecological Integrity, Economic Prosperity, and Social and Cultural Vibrancy.

The breakfast is being held to engage the community in a conversation on the 11 principles of the Dubuque sustainability model identified by Dubuque citizens. The principles are organized according to Dubuque’s three-part sustainablity model.

• Resource Management
• Community Design

Social/Cultural Vibrancy
• Green Buildings
• Healthy Local Food
• Community Knowledge

Environmental Integrity
• Healthy Air
• Clean Water
• Native Plants & Animals

The event is part of the National Conversation on Climate Change to inform and inspire local climate action co-sponsored by ICLEI. The event is expected to last 90 minutes and will begin with a presentation on the 11 principles and a short video. Attendees will then break into small groups to discuss the principles and ways in which citizens can incorporate the 11 Sustainability principles into their personal and professional life. This event will also provide an opportunity to identify community goals and actions steps which will be considered for incorporation into the Sustainable Dubuque community action plan.

“The 11 Sustainability Principles identified by the citizens of Dubuque represent our community’s commitment to a comprehensive approach to sustainability. There are already many examples of best practices that exist in our community,” said Sustainable Community Coordinator Sheila Samuelson. “These principles are part of the vision originally established by the Mayor and City Council and reflect our community values that citizens want to preserve and leave for future generations.“
