[ARCHIVED] Dubuque Named Healthy Iowa Community

The Academy for a Healthy Iowa, a collaboration between the Iowa Department of Public Health, Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, and Nutrition and Wellness Council of Iowa, has awarded Dubuque the 2010 Healthy Iowa Community award.

The Academy for a Healthy Iowa seeks to annually recognize the healthiest schools, communities, universities and visionaries in the state. The awards identify organizations and institutions implementing the best health practices across Iowa. Healthy Iowa award winners are selected based on criteria established by the academy that show how applicants provided access to wellness, activity, programming, financial commitment, measurability and sustainability.

Dubuque was awarded for its efforts in wellness, activity, programming, financial commitment, measurability and sustainability for the County Health Needs Assessment and Health Improvement Plan (CHNA-HIP), Live Healthy Dubuque 100 Day Challenge, Dubuque Farmer’s Market, Reinventing the Family Meal Program, Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program and Crescent Community Health Center. These efforts were made possible through partnerships with many organizations in the community including the Dubuque County Board of Health, the Dubuque Visiting Nurses Association, and others.

The award was presented to City of Dubuque Public Health Specialist Mary Rose Corrigan at a ceremony in Des Moines on September 23. Healthy Iowa Award winners will receive “Healthy Iowa” designation for a period of three years, at which time they may reapply for the designation.
