[ARCHIVED] HUD Reports Scam Targeting Individuals Seeking Access to Housing Choice Voucher Waitlists

HUD has reported a concern of a scam targeting individuals seeking access to Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) waitlists across the country. An unauthorized entity is falsely presenting itself online, offering a shortcut to HCV Voucher Waitlists.

HUD has reported a concern of a scam targeting individuals seeking access to Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) waitlists across the country.  It appears that an unauthorized entity is falsely presenting itself online, offering a shortcut to HCV Voucher Waitlists.

This scam has also evolved, with scammers also impersonating landlords via fake emails and unlawfully soliciting deposits from unsuspecting individuals under the guise of HCV approval.

Please note that the City of Dubuque’s HCV Waitlist will ONLY open on the second Tuesday of the month and the link to apply is available ONLY from the City of Dubuque at www.cityofdubuque.org/HCV. Applicants are also able to check the status of their applications at that website.  Official communications regarding HCV waitlist placement will come directly from the City of Dubuque PHA, not from any other source.

If you have been placed on the official City of Dubuque HCV Waiting List you will receive an official letter delivered via USPS, written on City of Dubuque Housing & Community Development letterhead.

There are NEVER any fees associated with applying for or being placed on the HCV waitlist.  Any request for money in exchange for waitlist placement or expedited service is a scam.

Those believed to be targeted by these scams are encouraged to report their experiences to the City of Dubuque Housing & Community Development Department at housing@cityofdubuque.org and to local law enforcement. This information can be invaluable in preventing further victimization. Targeted individuals may also file a complaint with the HUD Office of Inspector General via www.hudoig.gov
