[ARCHIVED] Police & Financial Institutions Warn of Phishing Attempts

Dubuque Police have received numerous reports from citizens and area financial institutions of ongoing “phishing” attempts.

During these attempts, the potential victim is contacted via phone and informed there is an issue with their debit card resulting in it being blocked. The victim is then asked to press a number on their phone to receive customer service. They are then asked to provide their card number and PIN in order to unblock the card.

Citizens are again reminded that financial institutions and/or legitimate companies/businesses will not contact you unsolicited via phone, e-mail, text, etc. and ask that you provide account, personal or access information. Citizens are also reminded that caller I.D. is not a reliable, safe method with which to verify the legitimacy of an incoming call. When in doubt, do not provide any information and instead contact your financial institution at a number you have confirmed as legitimate and inform them of the incident.
