On Tuesday, April 7th, 2015, at approximately 2:37 p.m. Dubuque Police received another report of individuals purporting themselves as Water Department employees in an attempt to gain access to a residence, this time on Nevada Street.
Other attempts have happened on Grandview Avenue, Booth Street, Jeffrey Drive and Wartburg Place. During one of the above 5 incidents, the suspects were successful in stealing property from within the home. The suspects are described as males with dark complexions, often wearing attire such as a safety vest to give a more official appearance. Once inside the home, one individual distracts the resident while the other steals property. The effort to distract could include trying to get the resident into the basement to check water pipes, meter, etc. Another ploy involves going to a home located next to one that is advertised as “for sale” or “for rent”, and faking interest in said property to get inside the neighboring residence.
Thus far, most of the targeted residences have been inhabited by senior citizens. Residents are again reminded to be vigilant and immediately report ALL suspicious persons, vehicles and/or behavior to police. Residents are also reminded to keep homes and vehicles secure and never let someone inside if you are not absolutely sure it is safe to do so and without first verifying their identity and purpose.
