Community Engagement Coordinator Temwa Phiri joined the City of Dubuque in July 2019. Temwa holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and health and wellness recreation from the University of Dubuque, along with a master’s degree in higher education from Western Illinois University. Temwa previously served as a Re-Engage Coach with the Dubuque Community School District since 2013. He worked as a Personal Empowerment Facilitator for the University of Dubuque, and has past experience as a behavioral health counselor. He is a health coach with Mindset Nutrition, empowering community members to live a healthier active lifestyle through proper nutrition and mindfulness. In his work as a Re-Engage Coach, he created meaningful relationships with students by meeting them where they were at while working alongside them. In pursuing his master’s degree, he focused on student holistic experience on campus and engagement in the community. Temwa is an active community volunteer, having served with Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Fountain of Youth, Dubuque Black Men Coalition, Multicultural Family Center Teen Night, and Junto’s through Iowa State University Extension.
