Pet-Friendly Community Committee Seeks Input

DUBUQUE, Iowa – As part of an effort to make Dubuque a more pet-friendly community, a committee of volunteers and City of Dubuque staff is seeking input from Dubuque residents and stakeholders on access to local pet services and amenities.

In 2018, the Dubuque City Council identified “Pet-Friendly Community: Policy Direction & Actions” as a policy agenda high priority.  Since then, a Pet-Friendly Community Committee has been using the U.S. Conference of Mayors Pet-Friendly City Assessment to identify potential opportunities to improve the pet-friendliness of Dubuque.  The assessment considers four aspects of a community: parks, shelters, homes, and businesses.

The committee is currently seeking input from the community about their perceptions regarding access to pet services and amenities.  “In addition to collecting data and information on current practices, it’s important to understand the community’s awareness of resources and perceptions of pet-friendliness as we evaluate recommendations that include public education efforts,” said Assistant City Manager Cori Burbach.

The Pet-Friendly Community Committee includes six City staff members, a Park and Recreation Advisory Commission representative, a representative of Friendly Intelligent Dog Owners (FIDO), a knowledgeable individual on the issue who might provide a different perspective than FIDO, a representative from the Dubuque Regional Humane Society, and a person involved in the pet businesses.
