March 15, 2019 -- For Immediate Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The public is invited to the dedication of the Ann Michalski Conference Room from 5-6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, in the City of Dubuque Housing and Community Development Department, Suite 312 of the Historic Federal Building at 350 W. 6th Street.  A program will begin at 5:30 p.m.

In addition to serving three terms on the Dubuque City Council, Ann Michalski, (1932-2014) served for several years on both the City’s Housing Commission and the Community Development Advisory Commission.  Due to her service and her fierce advocacy for affordable housing and our community’s neighborhoods, Dubuque’s Housing Commission and Community Development Advisory Commission voted unanimously to recommend to the City Council that the conference room be named after Ann Michalski to honor her significant contributions to the Dubuque community.  In 2018, a “Friends of Ann Michalski” committee raised the funds to pay for the dedication plaque.

The Ann Michalski Conference Room dedication event will include an unveiling of the dedication plaque and remarks from the Mayor Roy D. Buol, members of the Housing Commission, and a representative of Ann’s family.  Refreshments will be served.

Ann Michalski moved to Dubuque permanently in 1978.  Throughout her life, she was a community activist and tireless advocate for a multitude of issues including downtown development, neighborhood revitalization, affordable housing, mental health and the arts.  She served on numerous boards and her achievements include the Clarke Humanitarian Award, Dubuque Mental Health Advocate Award, the State of Iowa Volunteer Award, National League of Cities Outstanding Woman Elected Official, the Elisha Darlin Arts Award, and the Dubuque County Democrats Hall of Fame.
