October 16, 2018 -- For Immediate Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa – A hazmat drill at the Canadian Pacific railyard near the Lower Bee Branch Creek is scheduled for Thursday, October 18. The drill will take place from mid-morning until approximately 2 p.m.

The Dubuque Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) group, in coordination with the Canadian Pacific Railway, will conduct the training. Several local agencies will participate including the Dubuque Fire Department and the Dubuque and Jo Davies County Emergency Management Agencies.

The drill will simulate a rail car leaking oil into the Bee Branch Creek and will include emergency responders reacting to the simulated incident. There will be fire trucks, boats, a hazmat truck, and other emergency vehicles on site. Responders will be in the water for a portion of the exercise.

CAER conducts training and obtains equipment which is readily available to respond to hazardous materials emergencies along the Mississippi River. The group focuses on limiting damage and maintaining environmental integrity of the community.
