Aug. 2, 2018  – For Immediate Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa – As weather permits starting Monday, Aug. 6, the City of Dubuque Public Works Department will spray weed control in various areas of rip-rap on the river side of Dubuque’s flood control system (U.S. Senator John C. Culver Floodwall).

The areas scheduled the week of August 6th include the area along Volunteer Drive from the parking lot south of the lock and dam to A.Y. McDonald Park,  the channel rip-rap along A.Y. McDonald Park, and the area along the Peosta Channel to the Alliant Power Plant. Work will continue the following week until all rip-rap along the flood control system is treated.

The work is being done in accordance to the United States Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Technical Letter (110-2-583), which requires the removal of unacceptable growth within the “Vegetation-Free Zone.”  The requirement applies to all vegetation except grass along the flood control system. Signs along the flood control system will identify the area being sprayed.  With no weather delays, the project is expected to be completed by Friday, August 24.  The City of Dubuque Public Works Department cautions people to keep their children and pets out of direct contact with the sprayed weeds for 24 hours after application.

For additional information, contact the public works department at 563-589-4250.
