Dubuque to Celebrate National Public Works Week

DUBUQUE, Iowa – National Public Works Week, May 20-26, celebrates the contributions of public works professionals and the communities they serve. The City of Dubuque will celebrate with two events to increase public awareness of public works professionals’ contributions, duties, practices, and goals. 

Sponsored annually by the American Public Works Association, National Public Works Week features activities and programs to celebrate the contributions of public works professionals as well as the communities they serve. The theme for this year is “Power of Public Works” and was selected to give voice to the impact the many facets of public works have on modern civilization. From providing clean water to disposing of solid waste, to building roads and bridges or planning for and implementing mass transit, to removing snow on roadways or devising emergency management strategies to meet natural or man-made disasters, public works services play a major role in determining a society’s quality of life. 

Public works professionals employed with the City of Dubuque work in departments that provide water service, sewer service, engineering services, trash and recycling collection, and maintain the city’s street infrastructure, riverfront property, landfill, as well as public facilities and grounds. They are, in short, the people who maintain and improve the systems and services vital to a community’s health, safety, and comfort.

The City’s public works department and engineering department will host an open house for those ages 14 and up from 5:30 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, at the Municipal Services Center at 925 Kerper Ct. The open house will feature tours, talks, and equipment on display. Those interested in learning about a career in public works are encouraged to attend. Another local activity scheduled for National Public Works Week includes a children’s scavenger hunt and displays of public works equipment and vehicles at the Dubuque Farmer’s Market on Saturday, May 26. There will be multiple staff and approximately 10 public works machines spread throughout the market area, with a City of Dubuque Public Works Department booth on the corner of 13th and Iowa streets.
