DUBUQUE, Iowa — The public is invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the City of Dubuque’s new Jule Operations and Training Center at 949 Kerper Blvd. The event will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 19.
The event will include remarks by representatives of the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration, Iowa Department of Transportation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and local officials. Following the ribbon-cutting, facility tours and refreshments will be available. Attendees are asked to use the center’s south parking lot and Kerper Blvd. entrance.
The Jule Operations and Training Center serves as the new operations center for the Jule, replacing the nearly 100-year old facility at 2401 Central Ave. that will now be used by the City for storage. The new facility’s location reutilizes an existing City-owned site which previously was the location of the City’s public works garage. The location is also a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) superfund site, designated by the EPA as the Peoples Natural Gas Site. The new facility is the long-term, planned use of the site which contains soil and groundwater contamination that require follow-up activities and monitoring.
The new facility features a classroom-style training center, commercial drivers license (CDL) training area, indoor vehicle storage, vehicle parts storage, and dispatch center. The $6.8 million project was funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration, Iowa Department of Transportation, Dubuque Metropolitan Area Transportation Study, and the City of Dubuque.
The Jule Operations and Training Center is the third and final component of the Intermodal Transportation Campus funded by a Federal Transit Administration State of Good Repair Grant, received in October 2011. The first and second components, the Intermodal Terminal and an attached three-level parking facility, are located in the in the Historic Millwork District.
