Dubuque Mayor Cavanagh Participates in Bloomberg CityLab Conference

OCTOBER 26, 2023

Dubuque Mayor Brad Cavanagh recently returned from participating in Bloomberg CityLab 2023, a prestigious, multi-day summit held October 18-20 in Washington, DC. Cavanagh was one of just 50 U.S. mayors invited to participate in this global cities summit.

Organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies in partnership with the Aspen Institute, Bloomberg CityLab brought together more than 500 city leaders, experts, innovators, and artists from over more than 200 cities spanning 40 countries and six continents. In addition, more than 100 mayors attended CityLab 2023 from leading cities in the U.S., Europe, Africa, and Latin America, attending sessions addressing challenges cities are facing regarding climate, infrastructure, technology, migration, gun violence, and more.

“It was an honor to represent Dubuque at this year’s Bloomberg CityLab,” said Cavanagh. “Dubuque’s inclusion in this exclusive, global event is a strong testament to our community’s accomplishments in sustainability, housing, the arts and so much more.”

“Three focus areas really stood out for me at this conference: housing, climate resilience, and the future of artificial intelligence,” added Cavanagh. “There are so many innovative ways in which cities are facing these challenges worldwide. In our rapidly changing world environment, it is so important that cities learn from one another to find effective solutions to these issues.”

Featured speakers and participants for the tenth Bloomberg CityLab included Michael R. Bloomberg, Senior Advisor and Infrastructure Coordinator at the White House Mitch Landrieu, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, EPA Administrator Michael Regan, Vishaan Chakrabarti, Dachner Keltner, Matthew Thompson, mayors from hundreds of cities across the globe, and more. Topics ranged from leading communities through rapid urbanization, to confronting emerging technologies, to reinvigorating economic development, and solving housing affordability challenges.

“Conferences like these offer many opportunities to build relationships with other mayors, city officials, and other professionals. These contacts, along with our continuing partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies and their many great programs for cities, grant Dubuque access to world-class resources and training that will help us achieve our goals,” said Cavanagh.

Cavanagh has served as Dubuque’s Mayor since 2021 after previously being a member of the City Council from 2019-2021.
