Dubuque's First Park(ing) Day on Sept. 15 - 16
The City of Dubuque Sustainability Office is partnering with Dubuque Main Street to hold the first Park(ing) Day in Dubuque this Friday, Sept. 15, and Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Park(ing) Day is a global, public, participatory project where people across the world temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer, greener, and more equitable streets for people.
Participants are creating parklets for visitors to enjoy in the following locations:
- Main St. from 5th St. to 11th St.
- Central Ave. from 14th St. to 19th St.
- Washington St. from 9th St. to 11th St.
There will be a wide variety of activities for adults and children.
- Dubuque Main Street will have lawn games and prizes available.
- Wagner’s Nursery will have pollinator plants, trees, shrubs, and perennials available for purchase.
- The Friends of the Mines of Spain will bring aspects of the Mines of Spain to the City through education opportunities and traveling nature exhibits.
- FEH Design will create a space for people to interact and learn about architecture.
- Habitat for Humanity will demonstrate how to upcycle furniture.
- Oh Happy Play will be an area for children to play with donated toys from the community.
- The Presentation Lantern Center will have a colorful attraction to promote their support for immigrants and refugees.
- El Paisano will have a seating area for people to enjoy their tacos.
- The Tri-Phoenix Group will have a media table for show streaming and video recording.
- Sustainable Dubuque will have craft activities including bubbles, chalk art, and paint.
Attendees should be aware that the streets will not be closed during the two-day Park(ing) Day event. The streets will be open to vehicular traffic and on-street parking will be allowed between reserved parklets. Please cross streets at designated crosswalks and intersections and only visit parklets from the sidewalk.
