City of Dubuque Secures AmeriCorps Grant to Strengthen Youth Development
July 5, 2023 -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The City of Dubuque is proud to announce it has been awarded a three-year grant from AmeriCorps, a renowned federally funded service program. This grant of more than $400,000, paired with local funding and support, will enable the City to continue its long-standing commitment to education and community development by deploying 45 AmeriCorps members who will design and implement comprehensive social and emotional learning interventions for K-12th grade students in Dubuque.
With a primary focus on fostering essential skills, AmeriCorps members will spearhead programs that target self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, goal-directed behavior, relationship skills, personal responsibility, decision-making, and optimistic thinking. By prioritizing these critical attributes, the City of Dubuque AmeriCorps members aim to equip local youth with the necessary tools to navigate challenges, enhance well-being, and succeed academically and beyond.
At the conclusion of the first program year, AmeriCorps members will be responsible for driving measurable changes in students' social and emotional competencies, empowering them to thrive in various aspects of life. Through in-school and out-of-school-time programs, these dedicated individuals will create supportive environments that promote personal growth and positive development among the student population.
In addition to the efforts of the AmeriCorps members, the City of Dubuque will seek to leverage the invaluable assistance of 100 volunteers to serve as mentors and contribute to youth programming. This collaborative approach will support the development of a comprehensive network of support for students in Dubuque.
“The City is grateful for the AmeriCorps investment of $404,798, which will be matched by $217,776 in local funds, with $176,526 in City of Dubuque support and $40,750 in private funding,” said City of Dubuque Community Impact Director Heather Satterly. “This substantial financial support showcases the shared commitment of the City of Dubuque, its partners, and the broader community to nurturing the educational and emotional well-being of its youth.”
AmeriCorps members will be stationed within local organizations, including the Dubuque Community School District, St. Mark Youth Enrichment, Carnegie-Stout Public Library, Multicultural Family Center, and the City of Dubuque’s Arts & Cultural Affairs, Engineering, and Leisure Services Departments, ensuring a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to supporting youth development.
The City of Dubuque has proudly sponsored the AmeriCorps Program since 2007, underscoring its ongoing commitment to the betterment of its community and the welfare of its residents. By investing in social and emotional learning interventions, the City demonstrates its dedication to equipping the next generation with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
The City of Dubuque is actively recruiting passionate individuals to join the AmeriCorps program and make a lasting impact on the lives of local students. As AmeriCorps members, individuals will have the unique opportunity to contribute their skills, expertise, and compassion towards empowering youth and fostering social and emotional growth. Motivated individuals who are dedicated to serving their community and shaping the future of young minds are encouraged to apply for these rewarding positions. By becoming an AmeriCorps member, individuals can play a vital role in creating a positive and nurturing environment for K-12 students in Dubuque, while gaining valuable experience and making lifelong connections.
