City of Dubuque News Release

City of Dubuque Offices Closed Monday for Juneteenth

June 14, 2023 -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City of Dubuque offices will be closed on Monday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.  This includes City Hall and most other City offices and facilities, including Carnegie-Stout Public Library.

There will be no service/schedule changes to trash and recycling collection and Monday routes will be collected as normal.  Additionally, there will be no schedule changes to transportation services provided by The Jule.  However, Intermodal Transportation Center offices will be closed and there will be no parking meter enforcement on Monday, June 19.

This is the first year the City of Dubuque will formally observe Juneteenth as a paid holiday for City employees who qualify. Juneteenth has been celebrated since 1865 and became a federal holiday in 2021. Juneteenth, also called Emancipation Day, is a celebration of the day in 1865 when the abolition of slavery was announced in Texas. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, it was not formally announced or enforced in the state of Texas until June 19, 1865, more than two years later.

The Dubuque Multicultural Center is offering free cultural events in celebration of Juneteenth from Friday, June 16 through Sunday, June 18.  For event details, visit www.mfcdbq.org.

For non-emergency issues during City office closures, please call 563-589-4415. In the case of an emergency, always call 911.
