City of Dubuque News Release

Sutton Pool Closed Tonight, June 1

June 1, 2023

As a safety precaution, Sutton Pool closed today, Thursday, June 1, at 3 p.m. due to cloudy water and reduced visibility. There will be no adult water walking or open swim at Sutton Pool this evening. Flora Pool will operate under normal pre-season hours unless water visibility conditions change and require early closure.

The pools are chemically balanced and safe for swimming. However, to operate safely, the water must be clear enough to see to the bottom. Iowa health code states, “A swimming pool shall be closed if the main drain is not clearly visible from the deck.”

Cloudy water is a common occurrence in pools and is impacted by several factors including filtration, chemical balance, environmental debris, and excess particles from swimmers including sunscreens, oils, make-up, and perspiration. When the excess particles gather, they reflect back the light and result in a cloudy appearance.

Pool water and the filtration systems have been tested and monitored regularly each day assuring the cloudy water is not due to a chemical imbalance. City staff continue to work diligently to address the issue.

Thank you for your patience with this process and understanding that safety is always our top priority.
