DUBUQUE, Iowa – This morning at 6:10 a.m. Dubuque Police officers were dispatched to conduct a welfare check on a subject reportedly in distress near the intersection of University and Pennsylvania Avenues in Dubuque. Police located Alberto Hernandez-Avilo, 32, of Dubuque in that area suffering from a stab wound to his abdominal area. Hernandez-Avilo was transported by ambulance to Unity Point-Finley Hospital, Dubuque, for treatment of what turned out to be non-life-threatening wounds. It was determined through the course of the subsequent investigation that Hernandez-Avilo had been stabbed during a disturbance earlier that morning at an apartment complex on Pennsylvania Avenue. As a result of the evidence and information gained by officers throughout the day, an arrest has been made in this case. 26-year-old Dayron Sanchez Guzman of Dubuque has been arrested for attempt to commit murder and is currently in custody at the Dubuque County Jail. Guzman will make his initial appearance Friday morning, 06/02/23.
Attempt to commit murder is a class “B” Felony punishable by confinement up to 25 years.
