April 28, 2023 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The City of Dubuque’s Historic Preservation Commission will host the 21st annual Ken Kringle Historic Preservation Awards ceremony Tuesday, May 2, in the Voices Studio at 1585 Central Avenue. The event is open to the public and the space is accessible. The event consists of:
- 6:00 p.m. – Reception with refreshments
- 6:30 p.m. – Heritage Works’ Duane Hagerty presents: The Mid-Century Modern Windows of St. Joseph the Worker
- 7:00 p.m. – Historic Preservation Commissions Awards Ceremony
The award program is named after the late Ken Kringle, known for his involvement with the Historic Preservation Commission as a member and chairperson, president of the Bluff Street Neighborhood Association, resident of the Cathedral Historic District, and member of the Old House Enthusiasts Club.
The award was created to acknowledge the best rehabilitation projects within the city of Dubuque. The 2023 Ken Kringle award winners are:
- 699 Iowa Street: The historic German Methodist Episcopal Church, now owned and utilized by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Dubuque. The work is for restoring and reusing a sacred space located in Jackson Park Historic District, especially the recreation of the long since removed belfry.
- 1759-1677 Iowa Street: The Jackson Park Row Houses, developed by Tom Kelzer and Gary Carner of GT Development LLC. The award is for the conversion of dilapidated, uninhabitable apartments into four individually owned row houses at historic Jackson Park.
- 895 Washington Street: The historic Kretschmer-Tredway Co., developed by Kretschmer LLC with Conlon Construction in the lead. The Kretschmer Lofts project is a large adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of a plumbing manufacturing building into 48 dynamic apartments in the Historic Millwork District.
- 510 W. 11th Street: The historic Adolph and Emma Luesch House, restored by Juan Nieto and Gina Kramer as their home. This small residential project demonstrates the dedication and time required to restoring and maintaining and elaborate Queen Anne home in the West 11th Street Historic District.
- 1724-38 Central Avenue: The Ferdinand A. Nesler Block, developed by Allison and Chris Richard of Carich Properties LLC. It is a small, mixed use commercial structure restoration with eight apartments and two commercial spaces in the heart of the Upper Central Avenue National Register Historic District.
- 1585 Central Avenue: The Voices Studio, rehabilitated from the Henry Willging Wallpaper and Paint Building, by Sam Mulgrew and Gene Tully of Voices Productions LLC. The rehabilitation of this space and adjoining warehouse, as well as the mural installations up and down the street, reinvigorates and enhances the Upper Central Avenue National Register Historic District.
The event is held in conjunction with the Dubuque County Historic Preservation Commission’s annual awards and in partnership with Dubuque Main Street.
