Smoke Detectors Alert Residents to Overnight Fire

The Dubuque Fire Department is reminding residents of the importance of having functional smoke detectors in homes following the safe escape of a family from their burning home last night.

A 9-1-1 call from the Almond Street residents was received at 1:51 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, after they were awakened by their smoke alarms. Five adults and two children were sleeping on the second floor of the home and were able to safely exit the home before Dubuque Fire Department staff arrived. A dog and three cats were rescued by firefighters.

“The fire started on the first floor and all the occupants were all sleeping on the second floor at the time of the fire and, without functioning smoke detectors, this incident could have had a very tragic ending,” said Dubuque Fire Chief Amy Scheller. “I encourage all residents to have smoke detectors on every floor of their home and to test them regularly and replace batteries if needed. Also, most smoke detectors must be replaced after 10 years.”

Although firefighters were able to have water on the fire by 1:58 a.m. and the bulk of the fire was extinguished by 2:05 a.m., damages to the home are estimated at over $150,000. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time but is believed to have started in the kitchen.
