CDC Expands Use of Updated Vaccine in Younger Groups

The CDC has expanded the use of updated (bivalent) COVID-19 vaccines to children ages 6 months through 5 years.

Children ages 6 months through 5 years who previously completed a Moderna primary series can now receive a Moderna bivalent booster 2 months after the final primary series dose. Children ages 6 months through 4 years who are completing a Pfizer primary series will receive a Pfizer bivalent vaccine as the third primary dose.

Currently, under 18% of Dubuque County's population age 5 and older has received a bivalent/updated booster. If you have questions ab out vaccinating your child, please contact your pediatrician or health care provider.

Report: COVID-19 vaccines saved US 3 million lives, $1.15 trillion

A recent study estimates that, through November 2022, COVID-19 vaccines prevented more than 18.5 million US hospitalizations and 3.2 million deaths and saved the country $1.15 trillion.

The modeling study estimated hospitalizations and deaths averted through the end of November 2022, at a time when 80% of the US population had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Approved COVID-19 vaccines have been available in the United States since December of 2020. Since Dec 12, 2020, 82 million infections, 4.8 million hospitalizations, and 798,000 deaths have been reported in the United States.

"Without vaccination the U.S. would have experienced 1.5 times more infections, 3.8 times more hospitalizations, and 4.1 times more deaths," the authors wrote. "These losses would have been accompanied by more than $1 trillion in additional medical costs that were averted because of fewer infections, hospitalizations, and deaths."

VNA Offering Walk-In Vaccination/Booster Clinics

The VNA is hosting walk in COVID-19 vaccination clinics for primary series and bivalent booster doses, including pediatric bivalent boosters, at its clinic at 660 Iowa Street in Dubuque. Primary series refers to the initial COVID-19 vaccine doses and the bivalent booster dose is a version of the COVID-19 vaccine that offers protection against the original strain of COVID-19 as well as the Omicron strain, which is now the predominant variant of the virus around the world. Appointments are not required.

Clinics are scheduled for:

Friday, Dec. 16, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 6, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 9, 3 - 6 p.m.
