Green Iowa Celebrates AmeriCorps Week

DUBUQUE, Iowa -- AmeriCorps Week 2021 (March 6-13, 2021) is a celebration of all things AmeriCorps – from the programs and organizations that make this national service initiative possible in thousands of locations, to the members who have pledged to “Get Things Done” since the program’s inception in 1994.

Green Iowa AmeriCorps Energy and Community members donate over 50,000 service hours annually to fulfill the goal to help Iowans become more energy efficient by offering free residential audits and weatherization, energy and environmental education, and community outreach services.  Weatherization can save a single homeowner $50-$350 annually, generating a total program savings of nearly $75,000 across Iowa annually. 

The City of Dubuque Sustainability Office hosts a Green Iowa AmeriCorps Energy and Community Team, made up of five team members who coordinate audits, outreach, education, and logistics. The team partners with Dubuque Area Solid Waste Agency sponsored Sustainable Schools AmeriCorps members and both teams work together to support our local community in waste reduction and energy efficiency.  They provide audit and weatherization services throughout Dubuque County and beyond.

To celebrate AmeriCorps Week, the Green Iowa Dubuque teams will be hosting a Fix It Workshop on Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 12 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Key City Creative Center (KCCC). The team will also relaunch Green Drinks on Tuesday. March 8, 2021 at 6:30 pm via Zoom. The team will finish out the week-long celebration with a local trash pickup as well as their regular volunteer services at Convivium Urban Farmstead and the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium.
