Nov. 9, 2020 -- For Immediate Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa – As Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11) approaches, the City of Dubuque is reminding residents that Veterans Memorial Plaza on Chaplain Schmitt Island in Dubuque remains closed to visitors due to construction.
The Dubuque American Legion Post 6 will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. The public is invited to attend and those who attend are asked to follow social-distancing guidelines, wear masks, and bring their own chairs.
Progress continues on the major enhancement project for the Veterans Memorial Plaza on Chaplain Schmitt Island. In September, the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Memorial was relocated to the plaza in a more prominent and accessible location. The “Skyward,” sculpture inspired by the heroism and sacrifice of Chaplain Schmitt and so many others, was also installed in September. This project is funded by the Dubuque Racing Association and its features will enhance the experience for all veterans and guests who visit. The project is expected to be completed in early spring 2021 with a special celebration being tentatively planned for Memorial Day weekend.
Those interested in purchasing a paver to be added to the plaza location to honor a veteran can visit
