Jan. 2, 2020 -- For Immediate Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The City of Dubuque Leisure Services Department is launching a campaign called “Re-imagine Comiskey” to get input on how to improve Comiskey Park. The park, located at 255 E. 24th St., has been expanded from 3.6 acres to 5.7 acres and will be updated to meet current recreation demands.

“This is our opportunity to go to the community and hear what their ideas and priorities are for the space. We want to know what they love about Comiskey Park and the changes they can imagine,” said Leisure Services Manager Marie Ware.

The leisure services department, in partnership with a consulting team, is hosting community input sessions to identify potential improvements for the park.

On Thursday, Jan. 9, a Re-imagine Comiskey Community Kick-Off will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. at Audubon Elementary School, 605 Lincoln Ave. It will include a project overview and an interactive exercise to help residents identify opportunities at the park. Food will be served and all ages are welcome to attend.

On Saturday, Feb. 8, a workshop for youth featuring “Hip Hop Architect” Michael Ford will be held at Fulton Elementary School, 2540 Central Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Ford has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Network and The TODAY Show and in Vibe, Rolling Stone, and Architect magazines.

Ford’s Hip Hop PARKitecture workshop is a music-infused event designed for ages 10-17. It explores city park planning and urban design through hip hop culture. The kids will participate in hands-on activities and group discussions, create vision boards, and work in small groups to create a design concept for Comiskey Park.

The Hip Hop PARKitecture workshop is free to attend and no prior design skills or knowledge are required. Parents are welcome to attend. Lunch will be served. To register for the workshop, visit www.cityofdubuque.org/comiskey or call the Leisure Services Department at 563.589.4263.

In addition to the workshops, residents are encouraged to take the Re-imagine Comiskey community survey at www.cityofdubuque.org/comiskey. The campaign will culminate with a Park Plan Reveal event on Thursday, Mar. 9, at Fulton Elementary School from 6 – 8 p.m.
