[ARCHIVED] News Release on Dec. 3rd Robbery & Officer-Involved Shooting

The following media release related to the robbery and officer involved shooting on Dec. 3, 2009, at Knickers Saloon was issued at approximately 8:50 P.M., 12/03/09.

On December 3, 2009 at 12:52 P.M. Dubuque Emergency Dispatch received a report of two subjects in Knickers Saloon, 2186 Central, armed with guns. As the call was dispatched to police units, an officer in a squad car was at the intersection of 22nd and Central and was immediately on scene. As the officer approached on foot from the corner of 22nd and Central he observed two suspects run out the front door of Knickers Saloon armed with long guns. The officer confronted the suspects and shots were exchanged between the suspects and the officer.

One of the suspects and the officer were wounded in the exchange. Both were transported to local hospitals by Dubuque Fire Department ambulances. The officer is in good condition with non-life threatening injuries. The wounded suspect underwent surgery and remains hospitalized. A condition report was not available at the time of this release.

Police continue to search for the second suspect, last seen fleeing on foot south on Central Ave. He is described as a black male, in his 20’s or 30’s, 5’5”-5’9”. At the time of the robbery this suspect was wearing a tan Carhart style hooded coat. A similar style coat was located by police in the area of the robbery and the suspect may no longer be in possession of this coat. The suspect was also wearing dark jeans with some type of stitching or pattern on the pockets and white or light colored tennis shoes.

Both suspects wore ski-type masks while in Knickers and took an undetermined amount of cash from the bar’s cash register and safe. Some of the money taken from the robbery was recovered from a car parked in the nearby area. This vehicle was taken into police custody and processed for evidence. No employees or patrons of Knickers Saloon were injured during the robbery.

At this time, no charges have been filed in connection with either the robbery of Knickers or the shooting of the officer. Dubuque Police continue with the investigation, assisted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office, and Iowa State Patrol.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call the Dubuque Police at 563-589-4415.
