[ARCHIVED] Burbach Named Sustainable Community Coordinator

Dubuque City Manager Michael Van Milligen has named Cori Burbach as the City of Dubuque’s new Sustainable Community Coordinator.

Her appointment is effective immediately, and she replaced Sheila Samuelson who recently resigned to accept a position with an international firm in Chicago.

“Cori has the educational background and experience that we were looking for to take our sustainability initiative to the next level with our many partners,” said Van Milligen.

As Sustainable Community Coordinator for Dubuque, Burbach is responsible for continuing the development and implementation of the City’s “Sustainable Dubuque” plan and programs. Under the direction of a community task force, the City of Dubuque has adopted a three-part approach to sustainability to create policies and programs that address economic prosperity, environmental integrity, and social cultural vibrancy. The task force has also identified 11 sustainability principles to guide the City’s sustainability efforts.

"I have been impressed by the work of community leaders, residents and businesses in Dubuque, even before ‘sustainability’ was a national trend," said Burbach. “I’m excited to work with City staff and our partners to implement the City’s plan to make Dubuque a more sustainable and prosperous community.”

Burbach joined the City of Dubuque as a management intern in June 2007 through the International City Manager’s Association (ICMA) Local Government Management Fellows Program. At the completion of the program in June 2009, she was named stimulus coordinator for the City and has coordinated Dubuque’s grant applications for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. Her work for the City has involved working with the Sustainability Task Force and the Smarter Sustainable Dubuque project, Historic Millwork District revitalization, and federal and state legislative priorities. Burbach’s previous experience includes appointments as Resource Development Director for Dubuque Main Street, management intern for the Borough of Media, Penn.; planning intern for the Delaware Office of State Planning and Coordination in Dover, Del, and program coordinator for the University of Northern Iowa State & Local Government Program.

Burbach holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s degree in public administration, with a focus on city management and planning, from the University of Delaware.
