As part of the Resource Management Sustainability Principle, City staff are available to assist in public education efforts related to the reduction of single-use plastic bag use. In 2011, the City Council adopted goals that focused on voluntary reduction of single-use bags through retailer engagement and public education.
A customizable toolkit is available for retailers interested in reducing the use of single-use plastic bags. The toolkit includes:
BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag) window clings in multiple sizes
BYOB graphic files to customize for your business's use
Employee training video, emphasizing strategies like asking "do you need a bag today?", to raise awareness and reduce use of single-use bags by customers.
Access to data regarding single-use bags is helpful in tracking community-wide progress on this topic. A voluntary reporting form is also available for businesses who would like to share their anonymous data with the City.
