AmeriCorps members across Dubuque are participating in the nationwide celebration of AmeriCorps Week, March 11 - 17, spotlighting the vital work done by the AmeriCorps Partners in Learning Program since the national service program began in 2000.
AmeriCorps Week, celebrated each second week in March, recognizes and celebrates those who have served in, staffed, or managed an AmeriCorps program and the organizations and communities that support national service.
“Our AmeriCorps program is proud to serve the Dubuque community and we are grateful to have such a supportive community,” said Heather Satterly, program director for AmeriCorps Partners in Learning. “Current AmeriCorps members and alums have made a significant impact and AmeriCorps Week is a perfect opportunity to celebrate and recognize their great work.”
Since 2000, over 600 AmeriCorps Partners in Learning members have dedicated over 440,000 hours of service to the Dubuque community. There are more than 30 active members currently engaging the Dubuque community through the Dubuque Community School District. Over 40 members will engage the Dubuque community during the summer months through local organizations, including the City of Dubuque Leisure Services Department, St. Mark Youth Enrichment, the Multicultural Family Center, Carnegie-Stout Public Library, and the Dubuque Dream Center.
Since 1994, more than one million American citizens have dedicated hundreds of hours to make our country a better place, one community at a time. To mark AmeriCorps Week, local elected officials and reporters will shadow AmeriCorps Partners in Learning members to see the direct impact members are making.
AmeriCorps members typically remain actively engaged in their communities after their service is complete. They not only can be counted on as volunteers, but they also run nonprofits, marshal resources within their communities to address difficult issues, and frequently pursue public service careers.
