How to Apply

Process
Written applications for a property tax exemption are only accepted during the month of January and must be completed and filed with the City by February 1. A City Housing and Building Inspector will visit the property to ascertain its Code compliance.

Building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and all other permits required by state law or the City of Dubuque code of ordinances must be obtained for all improvements. Rental licenses also must be obtained for all rental units.

Qualified applications are forwarded by the City Council to the City Assessor who makes the final determination regarding the value of the exemption. Once approved, the property tax exemption remains with the property for a period of ten years without reapplication.

For late applications the property tax exemption remains with the property for the remaining number of years of the ten-year period.
