Mayor & City Council

As Mayor, and on behalf of the Dubuque City Council and City staff, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the City of Dubuque’s official website! Like our community itself, this website is continually expanding and evolving. Whether you are a current Dubuque resident, interested in moving to Dubuque, or starting, relocating, or growing a business here, this site will provide you with a wealth of information and interactive services to meet your needs.

Each year, my City Council colleagues and I review our vision for Dubuque’s future and, with citizen input, adopt goals and priorities for our community. In August 2015, we affirmed our vision statement for the City of Dubuque:
Roy D. Buol
  • The city of Dubuque is a progressive, sustainable city with a strong diversified economy and expanding global connections;
  • The Dubuque community is an inclusive community celebrating culture and heritage and has actively preserved our Masterpiece on the Mississippi;
  • Dubuque citizens experience healthy living and active retirement through quality, livable neighborhoods and an abundance of fun things to do and they are engaged in the community, achieving goals through partnerships; and
  • Dubuque City government is financially sound and providing services with citizens getting value for their tax dollars.
If you would like to learn more about our City’s goals and priorities, click here. Of note, one of our five-year goals is a commitment to creating a truly sustainable city. It is considerably rewarding to see the progress Dubuque, as a whole, is making toward this essential issue of our generation. I hope you will visit the Sustainable Dubuque web site to learn more.

If you are a virtual visitor, I invite you to come to Dubuque soon and experience the flavor and the benefits of an authentic “Masterpiece on the Mississippi!” Our community features a rich history, magnificent historical architecture, diverse arts and cultural amenities, and abundant natural beauty, including majestic limestone bluffs along our beautiful riverfront. The Port of Dubuque is home to the
America’s River Project, an amazing project that transformed our once-neglected riverfront into a 90-acre campus of attractions that celebrate our connection to the Mississippi River.

Dubuque is blessed with a hardworking, skilled and educated workforce, supported by numerous quality private and public institutions of higher learning. Our progressive economic development focus promotes citizen involvement in developing City priorities. This formula for success has positioned Dubuque to be among the top cities in the Midwest to raise a family, have a meaningful career, start or grow a business, and enjoy life! This fact is supported through numerous community awards and recognitions.

I believe you will find the City of Dubuque website to be user-friendly and I invite you to use it as another way to interact with our local city government. Thank you for visiting and come back soon!
