Overview

Getting Ahead in the Workplace is a personal development curriculum designed to help individuals take control of their future. If you are struggling to get by day-to-day and living in daily instability, Getting Ahead can offer you the chance to create your path to a stable, secure future for you and your family. Build the resources you need to get ahead!

The Getting Ahead workbook is based on Philip DeVol's Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-by-World: Building Your Resources for a Better Life. Learn more about the Getting Ahead curriculum we use, here

What to Expect

The class is presented as a discussion, facilitated by past graduates. It is a gathering of people with the common goal of wanting to get ahead. In the class, you will investigate your experience of living in daily instability, explore the "hidden rules" and special language needed to get ahead in the workplace, and learn how to build the resources and relationships needed to build a life of stability and prosperity.

When a class completes the curriculum, a formal graduation ceremony is held to celebrate and recognize their achievement. Graduates are then matched with a support team that will work with them to continue achieving their goals.

Once participants graduate, they have the opportunity to put their goals into action at Circles. Each participant can be matched with a support team who cheers them on and offers resources and new ways to problem solve. Learn about Circles here.
Time Commitment

The class is 16-20 weeks long, and meets every Tuesday evening from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM. All meetings are held at Prescott Elementary School (1151 White Street, Dubuque). New classes begin in February and August.

After graduation, participants are encouraged to continue their success at Circles meetings, which take place at the same time as Getting Ahead (childcare and meal provided).
